Woodland caribou (Rangifer tarandus caribou) found in northern Newfoundland are uniquely adapted for life in their harsh environment, with thick coats and unique hooves that help them walk through deep snow and on soft ground. Every fall their hooves grow sharp edges to help them break through ice in search of food. It was a honour to observe these gentle giants of the north during the rut.
