Muskox (Ovibos moschatus) is another winter specialist. Their unique coat of guard hair and inner wool or qiviut is some of the warmest wool in the world. Designed to protect them from the harsh Arctic winters, Muskox shed their qiviut undercoat in the spring. Muskox are impacted by the changing climate. Warmer temperatures mean ice covering their meagre food source and soft wet snow forms large ice balls on the Muskox coat and undercarriage, with no easy way to remove it.
