With the back drop of a carved glacier wall, a huddle of gentoo penguins (Pygoscelis papua) dither at the ice edge readying themselves to make the perilous leap into the frigid Antarctic water. Penguin rookeries are often found on elevated ground a safe distance from the water and lurking predators, with a well worn path travelled to and fro.
