Coastal Wolves

On the north west coast of British Columbia, in the Great Bear Rainforest you find a subspecies of grey wolf called the sea wolf or coastal wolf (Canis lupus crassodon). These marvels of evolution have adapted to source up to 70% of their diet from marine resources. An extremely elusive species, they’re difficult to find and even more difficult to photograph. Most active with the tide cycle at dawn and dusk the coastal wolves return to the estuaries during the annual salmon run, as the salmon make their way upriver to their spawning grounds. I was honoured to spend rare time with this pack, observing their fishing prowess, pack dynamics and community care for their seniors and young.
